This lesson has been peer reviewed by C2SL participant teachers using the EQUiP rubric.
This unit provides multiple opportunities for students to understand the phenomena (bird beaks are inherited traits and adapt to increase survival in their environment) in lessons that are cohesive and build upon each other. Lessons are introduced through inquiry activities and are engaging. There are multiple links to strong resources that can be used to help students in their understanding of the phenomena. Students also learn about their local bird populations.
Note: Access to a variety of bird viewing opportunities or webcams is highly recommended for this unit.
Teachers will need to collect materials in advance for the bird feeder construction project.
Thoughts on stronger alignment to NGSS: The teacher will need to differentiate the lessons to support different learners. This project does not include time for students to test and then redesign/rebuild their bird feeders.
