- This lesson introduces ESOL or ELL students to common food items and their location on supermarket shelves.
The lesson also provides an overview of the organization of supermarkets and the distribution of food items along different aisles. Materials include a list of vocabulary, cooperative learning activities, and a handout to complete while visiting the supermarket.

Utility of Materials Designed to Support Teaching: Superior (3)
A variety of materials are included in the lesson: vocabulary list, cooperative learning activities, and class handout. The vocabulary development list can be used in a number of ways: to introduce the vocabulary, to develop student writing skills, to highlight common characteristics of English spelling (double consonants, silent letters, etc.), as well as to practice alphabetical order.

Quality of Instructional and Practice Exercises: Strong (2)
The students enjoyed the interview activity wherein they were asked to complete a 4 Column Chart to detail student preferences. This activity brought students together as they began to know more about each other. As a form of cooperative learning, the 4 Column Chart interview activity helped the class develop a sense of solidarity.
