This looks really interesting! I agree that you would need to have some sort of follow-up or formative assessment, and you might want to link it into another, larger assignment -- so that you know the students are implementing their knowledge in a more meaningful way. Thanks!
QUESTIONS FROM IDENTIFYING BIAS TOOL ON GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION:
Have you considered your own beliefs about setting/location discrimination?
Does this source present certain areas of the world (geographic locations) as the sole perspective, standard or norm?
Does this source depend on a harmful stereotype about specific regions or locations for complete understanding of the content?
Does this source leave out concepts of diverse locations (ex: rural, South, colonized lands) when it could be added for deeper context?
Does this source demonstrate positive regional/geographic identities (for historically marginalized people)?
I recognize my privilege in being born in the United States and having citizenship. I have only recently learned that people from my home region of the country - Appalachian Mountains - experience discrimination because of their physical place. The orientation of this map provides a different perspective than is often offered in maps in US education which centers the US on the center or on the left side, which brings value in re-wiring biases around geography and location.. The source does not provide a deep or critical look at geographic location as it only provides videos by continent, erasing the diverse identities of countries and nations and/or the interconnectedness of humans across the globe. Further, the largest clickable image for students to interact with is images highlighting a US city. This source provides videos and images that offer a diverse visual exploration of people around the world, as well as article on global warming issues. The resource minimally builds critical consciousness by exposing students to diverse people from around the world, but does not raise issues of equity and justice or move toward a social action approach to the learning.
Thank you for this resource
thanks for this resource
Here in our area we don't have cultural geography because of the nature of the society.
