The Pathways Project, an initiative from the Department of World Languages at Boise State University, is a collaborative network of open educational resources (OER) including instructional language teaching materials and professional development created by and uniquely for Idaho’s K-16 language teachers and students.

Teachers and students participating in the Pathways Project come from different fields of study and schools across Idaho to create open (i.e., free), digital activities that support the teaching and learning of foreign languages and promote intercultural competence. In this activity, students will have the opportunity to create a campaign commercial to run as the new president of Boise State. They will practice using vocabulary related to governments and actions that political figures take. Students will be able to discuss preferences relating to politics and government.

Students will practice recognizing family member terms (i.e. abuela: grandma), describe family members, and accurately use vocabulary related to families in Spanish. They will acquire information about another individual’s family and will practice describing their own and others’ family members.

In this activity, students will practice accepting and rejecting invitations. This includes students getting the chance to create their own invitation and invite students to activities. Students will learn more about activities, parties, times, and dates in Spanish. Students will also learn how to politely accept and reject invitations. Students will also learn how to ask questions about specific information relating to parties and events.

In this activity, students will use vocabulary describe what they eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Students will also be able to identify whether or not the meal is nutritious and healthy. Students will learn more about how to describe food and health. Students will also learn more about reading and understanding nutrition fact.

In this activity, students will discuss Spain's New Year 12 grape tradition, going on dates in their own city, and their own holiday traditions. This activity could be modified from focusing primarily on the L1 culture to the L2 culture in order to integrate more culture into the activity. This activity is more conversation based and less culture based, though it does discuss some Spanish traditions.

In this activity, students will review and practice naming their body parts in Spanish. They will also use the vocabulary they already know to give clues to their classmates to describe a body part. Students will practice asking and answering questions relating to the body and come up with solutions for illnesses.

In this activity, students will learn what medicines treat which conditions and which relieve symptoms of illness in the target language. Students will learn to describe medicines and symptoms to be relieved. Students will discuss home remedies in Mexico. Students will also compare and contrast medicines and home remedies in the United States in comparison to Mexico.

In this lab, students will discuss where they live, the furniture they have in their home, and where one might be able to shop for certain household items. Students will learn how to describe furniture, housing, and useful household items. Students will also express opinions about furniture and where they prefer to live.

Students will learn which languages are spoken in which countries as well as be able to recognize Spanish accents from around the world. Students will learn more about accents from different Spanish-speaking countries by recognizing the differences in played recordings.

Students will be able to exchange information about recycling, the environment, and animals around the world. Students will learn how to describe nature and explain their opinions regarding the environment. Students will also be able to communicate with others and present their opinions to the rest of the class on their ideas on nature.

Students will discuss the environment and their favorite ways to get around and things to do outside. Students will also be able to compare and contrast between transportation options in both their hometown and Spanish speaking countries. Students will be able to express their opinion regarding the environment and transportation and back up their argument using Spanish.

In this lab, students will continue to practice using terms and vocabulary regarding banking. They will build off of the vocabulary learned in the previous lab, such as banks, banking, money saving and transactions.

In this lab, students will evaluate how social media affects their wellbeing and describe how they feel about certain current events. Students will learn to express personal feelings and opinions regarding literature, social media, and news. Additionally, students will create follow-up questions to create a conversation with others.

Students will use their imaginations to create inventions and describe their usage to their classmates in the target language. Students will describe preferences and use reasoning to support their argument as to why their invention should be developed.

Students will discuss current events, world and local news, as well as dangerous weather and climates. In this activity, students will learn to talk about current events and describe an event in Spanish, acting as a television news reporter.
